Wedding Hints & Helpers:
Wedding Cake
How did we ever get into
the wedding cake
tradition anyway?
This sounds like a scene
from the Flintstones
but, during the days of
the Roman empire,
wedding cakes were
traditionally broken
over the head of the new
Bride by her Groom.
Maidens (bridesmaids)
would then scramble for
pieces of cake, and take
them home for good luck.
Thank goodness times
have changed, but
wedding cakes do
occasionally get smashed
by newlyweds into each
other's faces during the
cake cutting ceremony!
Also, before you go
smashing, remember how
much that Wedding Gown
cost!
Wedding cakes are now
available in a variety
of flavors (cheesecake,
carrot, chocolate,
etc.), and may have the
personalities of the
newlyweds represented as
a theme on the cake top.
Even though simple three-tiered cakes are quite popular, more elaborate wedding cakes that are a true work of art with a price tag to match are sometimes preferred. Prices vary from about $200 to $4,000 (gulp!). That cake had better be gold plated!
Some couples choose to forgo the traditional cake. One recent Maine wedding featured a "cake" made of 144 Krispy Kreme doughnuts smothered in honey. BTW, there are NO Krispy Kreme locations in Maine, so they needed to be flown in.
One more thought...are you really going to take the cake and literally smash it into your new spouse's face?
Might be more expensive fun (again...how much did that dress cost?) and isn't the best way to start of a brand new marriage. But I digress.
